Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. Our mission is to ignite wonder and empower dreams through science and nature and our purpose is Science for All.

Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion. Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province.

As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Position Description

The Brand & Creative Manager will lead visual storytelling and creative execution across all channels to achieve Science World’s goals, including driving brand recognition and engagement through innovative design solutions. This includes leading a team of designers and overseeing the implementation and execution of Science World’s visual brand identity, ensuring consistency and quality across all collateral and channels. Reporting to the Director, Brand & Marketing—who holds overall ownership of the brand—the Brand & Creative Manager works collaboratively across the organization to deliver visual solutions that meet business and audience needs from concept through completion.

The Brand & Creative Manager brings strong people leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, along with a solid foundation in design principles and production methodologies, that will enable the team to deliver thoughtful, effective, and brand-aligned creative work.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Operational Planning

  • Lead, manage and inspire a team of designers by providing mentorship, professional development, and career growth opportunities. Undertake recruitment, training, performance management and other HR requirements
  • Oversee and prioritize the workflow of the team to ensure seamless and successful delivery of high-quality, on-brand outputs, on time and to budget
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop Brand & Marketing team’s annual budget and operational plan

Creative Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead visual storytelling and creative execution across all channels to achieve Science World’s goals, including driving brand recognition and engagement through innovative design solutions
  • Hold accountability for bringing together stakeholders to understand and turn business needs into creative briefs to define creative approach, audience needs, measures of success, and execution considerations­
  • Inspire, lead and direct the creative team to contribute to creative briefs and to create visual concepts that align with Science World’s objectives and brand positioning
  • Provide day-to-day art direction by guiding, advising and mentoring team members providing clear feedback within the creative process to maintain brand consistency and design quality, including mentoring designers to present finalized ideas and concepts to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Director, Brand & Marketing to evolve Science World’s visual brand identity & design systems
  • Promote a data-driven culture to support learning, continuous improvement and a commitment to quality

Brand Management

  • Hold responsibility for the implementation and execution of Science World’s visual brand identity, ensuring consistency and quality across all collateral, marketing channels and customer touchpoints
  • Lead the curation and operational stewardship of Science World’s visual asset library. This includes developing and implementing processes and standards for the use, storage, and sharing of assets
  • Supervise vendors, contract/freelance designers and interns, including briefing on tasks, overseeing and coaching on the creative process, and ensuring timely and on-brand delivery of projects to budget

Technical execution

  • Hold ownership of wayfinding, including branding of key visitation areas and collaborating with Exhibits and Experiential Learning teams to ensure integration with exhibition content and programming spaces
  • Lead the end-to-end creative design and development of retail and donor recognition merchandise/products
  • Lead and art direct all photography and video shoots managing external partners—while mentoring designers in the end-to-end process to build their skillset
  • Keep informed on current trends, tools, and processes for both print and digital, and make recommendations based on organizational and team needs
  • Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
  • Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • University degree or post-secondary education in Graphic Design, Visual Communications or related discipline
  • 8+ years of experience in art direction, graphic design, or visual design with 2+ years of people management
  • Significant experience of requirements gathering, creative brief generation, conceptualizing and overseeing delivery of a wide range of design projects from start to finish with minimal supervision
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and developing design teams, with experience managing performance, providing constructive feedback, and fostering professional growth
  • Experience of developing creative concepts for others to work on and mentoring other creative professionals
  • Strong understanding of design principles, typography, colour theory, and visual hierarchy
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and other industry-standard design tools
  • Fully fluent in both digital and print media
  • A solid understanding of marketing and advertising principles
  • Familiarity with Science World’s mission and involvement with the community

Skills, Abilities and Attitudes

  • A strong people leader who can make decisions, take action and also feels comfortable asking questions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels, both within the organization and with external stakeholders
  • Strong conceptual thinking skills to translate abstract ideas into a well-defined form
  • Demonstrated organizational skills in project and time management, with an ability to manage resourcing and workflow for multiple projects
  • A team player who works to improve the team’s technical and creative performance
  • Strong consultative and problem-solving skills. Ability to build rapport and work/achieve results within cross-functional teams
  • Strong graphics and advanced print production skills. Photography skills (preferred)
  • Interest in exploring use of AI and other tools in the creative process to enhance ideation, design efficiency, or content generation

 

The pay range for this position is $82,000 – $90,000 per year.
